Valle Central
The most important Chilean wine-growing region in terms of volume
It is Chile’s most productive and internationally known wine region, located near the national capital, Santiago. Within the Valle Central there are four wine sub-regions: the Maipo Valley, the Rapel Valley, the Curicó Valley and the Maule Valley. These 400 km encompass many different climates and terroirs, resulting in very different wine profiles. A wide variety of wine styles and qualities can be found in this vast area.
CLIMATE
There is a great diversity of climates, from a mild Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cold, wet winters, to a climate with a strong influence of the cold wind from the Andes Mountains at night that increases the daily thermal oscillation and reduces the period of maximum temperatures.
SOILS
Since the region is huge, the soil types are very diverse, from colluvial to alluvial or even volcanic.
GRAPE VARIETIES The Central Valley is also home to a wide variety of grapes, but vineyards are dominated by the world-wide renown Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Chile’s "icon" grape, Carmenère, is also important there.
